Qualifying Begins for California Winter Outdoor ChampionshipsPublished by
Meets held over five weekends to determine finalists for annual meet By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor The third annual California Track and Field Winter Outdoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 17 at Arcadia High and qualifying meets begin Saturday with meets at Martin Luther King and Laguna Beach. There are additional qualifying meets throughout the state Jan. 20, Jan. 27, Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. Although the meets are being held outdoors, the schedule consists of several track events more commonly identified with indoor competitions, such as the 60-meter dash, 300, 600, 1,500 and 3,000 and 60 hurdles. There will also be 4x200 and 4x800 relays, along with 800 sprint medley and distance medley relays. The field events will be high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and shot put. At the championship meet, there will be a pentathlon and weight throw added to the schedule. Even if an athlete wins an event at a qualifying meet, the minimum standard to advance to the final must still be met. The cost for athletes to compete in unlimited events at qualifying meets is $12.
